Essential Notes: Agha: Respectful yet informal form of address. Alinazik adresses Mr. Muhsin as my agha as if he's addressing a village ruler/elder which indicates a further level of respect. If you feel my agha looks awkward you can replace instances of it with just agha. Agha is a title for a village ruler, it's also used for village elders. Villagers use it (rather than Mr.) when addressing each other respectfully. These are the reasons why Mr. Muhsin gets annoyed by being called my agha at some point. Abi: Means older brother. This is used when addressing for older men, invokes familiarity and respect. Singer: When people say singer they're mostly saying türkücü, a folk singer. Türkü is Turkish folk music. It can also refer to a single piece of Turkish folk music, as in "sing a türkü". Turkish folk music and Turkish classical music serve as a metonyms for older Turkish values/traditions in the film. Arabesque is a style of music, created with Arabic music influences, that became popular in the 70s and 80s. It used to get flak for being harbinger of some type of regressiveness, maybe still does. Gazino would be a nightclub but it's translated as club as I needed to differentiate it from pavyon which is translated as nightclub. Pavyon is a type of nightclub where women in skimpy outfits dance and sometimes visit tables and flirt with patrons, a gazino with a hint of strip club, so to speak. Extra Notes, you wouldn't miss much if you skip these: Müzeyyen Senar is an important Turkish classical music performer. Film opens up with Mr. Muhsin seeing her youth in a dream, performing Ağlamakla İnlemekle. Mr. Muhsin's assistant brings her photo from the his office and in a later scene Mr. Muhsin is seen cleaning this photo. Another Turkish classic music performer, Safiye Ayla, is also mentioned at one point. Ibrahim Tatlises is an arabesque and türkü singer, who became huge during the second half of the 70s, when the film is set. Tatlises means Sweetvoice, Mr. Muhsin says Ibrahim Sesiguzel (beautiful voice) at some point and gets corrected. Mashallah: An exclamation used for impressive or surprising situations. Also used to congratulate someone. Muhsin Kanadıkırık is the main character's name. Kanadıkırık means Broken Wing, there is an instance of wordplay based on this. TRT: Turkish Radio and Television Corporation, national public broadcaster of Turkey, Raki: A strong drink with high alcohol content.
